Balk serves final day as sheriff

Friday was the last day Brad Balk will serve as St. Joseph County Sheriff, and two public events took place to commemorate the occasion.

The 66-year-old Balk was recognized by local and state dignitaries during a program at Glen Oaks Community College. A second event, which Balk called a less-formal affair, will followed at the FOP Lodge east of Centreville.

Balk announced in November his plan to retire at the end of January, 11 months shy of the end of his third, four-year term.

A specially designated panel of county officials soon after chose Mark Lillywhite to complete Balk’s current term. Lillywhite, a Three Rivers resident who has served as undersheriff during Balk’s tenure as the highest elected official at the sheriff’s department, has filed papers to seek the position as a candidate in the August primary election.
