County commission considers service-agreement renewal

St. Joseph County undersheriff Jason Bingaman last week explained details of a service-agreement renewal with Canteen Food Service.

During Wednesday’s St. Joseph County Executive Committee meeting, Bingaman said the company provides food for jail inmates and the proposed agreement is nearly identical to the most recent contract.

He said per-meal cost is $1.61 if the jail population is 114 or less; $1.41 per meal if the number of inmates is 115 to 149; and $1.33 for 150 or more less than capacity.

Commissioners are expected to act on Bingaman’s request at their board meeting Tuesday.

Also Wednesday, the indigent-defense agreement for 2021 was discussed.

Commissioners were advised the number of attorneys for the indigent-fund defense will be comprised of a seven-person pool. There will be one less than there was this year, as David Marvin will step into the role of prosecuting attorney Jan. 1.
