Schoolcraft motel will be burned in training exercise

A long-abandoned motel north of Schoolcraft will be razed in coming weeks.

Vicksburg Village Council member Denny Olsen said the former Plainsman Motel in Schoolcraft Township will be intentionally set on fire to provide training for South County Fire Authority as well as other area fire departments.

Olsen said the burn will take place over a series of two days starting May 1. Meanwhile, coordination will involve Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department, MDOT, Schoolcraft Police and other agencies.

He said U.S. 131 speed limit is probably going to have to be cut down to 35 miles an hour or possibly closed while the fire is active.

He said the procedure will cover a weekend, allowing fire personnel to manage the blaze a room at a time and allow for follow-up investigations.

  1. Certainly practice makes perfect but doing it where it will affect traffic for 2 days on a US highway isn’t the place. Get a bulldozer.
