Former police director sentenced in DUI case

The former director of Sturgis Department of Public Safety was sentenced this week from a DUI charge last year.

Geoffrey Smith was placed on one year probation and is required to use an alcohol-monitor for 90 days. His arrest for driving under the influence occurred Aug. 15.

Smith was sentenced Wednesday via Zoom by Calhoun County District Court Judge Paul Beardslee.

Smith previously entered a guilty plea.

Deputies said Smith was involved in a crash while off-duty, in the 600 block of North Lakeview Avenue.

Defense attorney Mike Hill presented the court with a large number of letters of community support.

Smith already has completed alcohol-abuse assessment, counseling and attended an alcohol impact panel, Beardslee said Wednesday. He is not allowed to use or possess alcohol or drugs and may not enter places where they are sold.

  1. Michigan’s “zero tolerance” law prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from operating a motor vehicle with “any bodily alcohol content” defined as a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.02 but less than 0.08.

Right. Unless you’re a public servant or politician or an important person. Then you get off with a stern scolding and a brief time out.
