Marlene Freeman, 83

Marlene Freeman, age 83, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2021 surrounded by family at her home in Three Rivers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Sarah Aldrich, brother Marvin Aldrich, husband Jim Freeman, Grandson Erik Swerske-Barton, brother-in-law Jim Shay, and Doug and Phyllis Barton. Marlene is survived by her daughters, Barb Barton, Diann (Garry) King, and Kathee Barton, brother Fred Aldrich, grandsons Joshua (Aubrey) King, Rory King, great grandson Bryce King, great grand daughter Ella King, and sister-in-laws Shelia Shay, Pat Wilton, and Judy Aldrich.

Marlene had a real zest for life. She was a curious woman by nature and willing to try just about anything once. In her younger years Marlene loved to go snowmobiling and could be found on weekends racing her SnoJet at the drag races. In retirement, Marlene toured the country with her late husband, Jim, in their motorhome and they visited many beautiful places. She was a fabulous gardener and could grow tomato plants six feet high. Marlene was also very creative and loved to do crafts and knit hats for charity. In her professional life, she started out as an x-ray technician with a young family, then eventually transitioned into banking where she worked her way up to vice president of loans. Marlene was a hard worker who never gave up in anything she did, a trait she passed on to her three daughters.

Marlene loved her three daughters and even through her battle with dementia could always manage to express her deep and abiding love with a kiss and an “I love you more”.  As with many families, Covid kept them apart for much of her final year, but in the last month of her life the family was able to be together with her. Marlene will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, faith in God, strong work ethic and the kindest heart.

Due to Covid, there will be no public memorial service. Interment will be held at a later date at DFW National Cemetery, Dallas, Texas. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Arrangements by Grand Rapids Cremation Services.
