Road commission provides annual reports to commissioners

Focusing on the state of the agency, and its many road, bridge and maintenance projects, St. Joseph County Road Commission Managing Director John Lindsey provided annual reports from 2019 and 2020 Tuesday before the county board of commissioners.

Highlights from 2019 included upgrading a one-mile stretch of Constantine Road from Mintdale to Featherstone roads on the border of Constantine and Florence townships, as well as a mile of Balk Road from U.S. 12 to Fawn River Road in Sturgis Township. Both routes are local roads.

In 2020, more than seven miles of Burr Oak Road – from Burr Oak village north to M-86 in Colon Township – were upgraded at a cost of $1.2 million.

Other tasks in 2020 included 46 miles of primary road chip-seal work totaling more than $800,000. The work included nearly seven miles of Flowerfield Road, five miles of Hackman Road, more than 4 1/2 miles of Shimmel Road and nearly four miles of Heimbach Road from U.S. 131 to M-60.
