Charges filed against Sheriff

A drunken-driving charge, as well as another offense, have been filed against St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite.

The charges come from Kalamazoo County, where Lillywhite was arrested in late February after allegedly causing a two-vehicle crash.

Charges of operating while intoxicated and carrying a concealed weapon while under the influence of alcohol were made official Wednesday.

Both charges are misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of 93 days in jail and/or fines. If convicted of the weapons charge, Lillywhite would also lose his concealed pistol license.

The crash happened around 2:20 a.m. Feb. 26 on U.S. 131 near West YZ Avenue, south of Schoolcraft. Authorities said the 47-year-old Lillywhite, a Flowerfield Township resident, was driving a vehicle that rear-ended another car.

  1. Two misdemeanor charges is what someone when you get drunk, cause an accident, don’t cooperate with police and even lie to them? My guess is that if this was Joe Average Citizen the charges would have been much worse and wouldn’t have taken 2 months to decide on. Our justice system is a joke and this is a prime example.

  2. Now Channel 3 is reporting that his blood alcohol level was nearly 3 time the legal limit. In Michigan that’s super drunk but evidently the Kalamazoo prosecutor can’t find the guts to charge him accordingly. I have tried to get comments from the county commission numerous times but none of them want to stand up and be counted. Is this who you really are St. Joseph County?

  3. Three times the legal limit, crashing and lying are misdemeanors?
Same if it was an ordinary citizen, right?
