Allen will run for sheriff

Former St. Joseph County Undersheriff Dennis Allen has announced his candidacy for sheriff.

Allen, 67, plans to file his paperwork this morning with the St. Joseph County Clerk’s Office. He said he intends to run as a Republican in the August 2024 primary.

The position is a four-year term.

Allen has been a member of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners the past seven years and is a former chairman of the board. Previously, he spent 26 years with the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, serving two decades as undersheriff during Matt Lori’s tenure.

Allen said he has secured endorsements from Lori and former sheriff Brad Balk.

A lifelong Centreville resident, Allen is the third candidate to announce a run for the sheriff department’s top post. Joe Bingaman, cousin of current undersheriff Jason Bingaman, and Chad Spence have already committed to the office.

  1. I’m at a loss as to why the position of sheriff is a partisan position. The law is the law and should be upheld regardless of political views. Barry County’s sheriff is a prime example. Dar only enforces the laws he himself believes in. Not a good look.
