River Cleanup dates announced

St. Joseph County Conservation District has announced dates and locations of its 2023 River Cleanup program.

Four dates will comprise this year’s effort. It starts June 12 with a weekday cleanup of the St. Joseph River in Leonidas Township. Work will start at Farrand Road and conclude at Jacksonburg Road.

Next, on July 15, attention will focus on the Rocky River, where a stretch from Null Road in Flowerfield Township to Hanks Tavern on the River in Three Rivers will be covered.

Agency officials said the third cleanup will take place August 5 on the Fawn River. Volunteers will start at Fawn River Kayak in the 30000 block of Fawn River Road, and end at Big Hill Road.

August 28 will be the final scheduled cleanup of the year. Workers will tackle the Portage River from Portage Lake in Mendon Township to Parkville Road in Park Township. The stretch is considered the most popular kayak and canoe route in the county.

More information will be announced as the first cleanup event approaches but Conservation District officials said volunteers are critical to the success of each event.
