Out and About – Week of July 3rd

If you are a history-buff, you’ll be interested in learning that for the first time since December 7, 1941, the Navy will have a USS Arizona serving in its fleet. Popular Mechanics reports the new Arizona is a Virginia-class attack submarine. The sub’s keel was laid recently at General Dynamics Electric Boat’s Quonset Point facility in Rhode Island.

Of the 2403 Americans killed during the Pearl Harbor attacks, 1177 were aboard the battleship Arizona. Unlike other ships, which were raised and repaired after the attack, Arizona was too badly damaged, becoming a permanent memorial to the attack. According to Popular Mechanics, the U.S. Navy frequently reuses ship names, but until now has never reused “Arizona”.

Every year on December 7, the Ben Shively VFW Post 3019, here in Three Rivers, holds a brief ceremony in Riverside Cemetery, at Ben Shively’s marker. Ben Shively was from Three Rivers and is entombed on the USS Arizona near Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The public is always invited to attend this ceremony at 1PM (7AM Honolulu time).

It’s a little early, but please mark your kitchen calendar for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 4-6. This is when the St. Joe Valley Old Engine Association will hold their annual tractor show. As usual, it will be held at Boot Hill Ranch, 10542 Bair Lake Street, just one and a half mile east of Jones. All Flea Market and Antique Vendors are welcome to contact the association’s website at SJVOEA.org for more information. Primitive camping is available for vendors at the commercial campground next door. This is a family event with a $5 admission at the gate, and kids ages 12 and under are FREE. Of course, food is always available on the grounds.

If you are a fan of Trivia, here are some facts concerning the Great Lakes that you might want to store away in your memory bank. You may even want to use them for your own game of Trivia:

The Keystone State was one of the largest and most luxurious wooden steamships running during the Civil War. In 1861, it disappeared. In 2013, it was found 30 miles northeast of Harrisville under 175 feet of water.
Goderich Mine is the largest salt mine in the world. Part of it runs underneath Lake Huron, more than 500 meters underground.
In size, Lake Michigan ranks third among the Great Lakes, and sixth among all freshwater lakes in the world.
Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake that is entirely within the borders of the United States.
There is alleged to be a 30 to 40-foot-long monster in Lake Erie named Bessie. The earliest recorded sighting goes back as early as 1793.
The first film showing a toilet flushing was only released in 1960. The Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece “Psycho” went down in cinema history for a myriad of reasons. However, one of the strangest is the fact that it was the first-ever film to show a toilet flushing. It’s a random fact, but it’s still impressive that moviegoers had to wait until 1960 to see a toilet flushing on the big screen.

See you Out and About!
