Constantine approves municipal building authority

Constantine village officials have established a municipal building authority, putting the community a step closer to funding for a new fire station.

During their Feb. 5 meeting, council members approved the measure as a prerequisite to apply for a federal Rural Development loan. The federal loans typically come with lower interest rates than traditional bank loans, village authorities said.

The village estimates a new fire station will cost more than $2.7 million.

According to Roger Swets, bond attorney for the law firm Dickinson-Wright, the village would lease the new station from the building authority and be responsible for its day-to-day expenses.

  1. This council needs to be shut down, thrown out and shamed. They have failed to live up to their oath of office, gladly giving away their oversight and authority over the major systems in the village so nonelected officials make all monetary decisions that village residents will have to pay for without any recourse.

  2. Why does the village pay for everything when 2 townships are full partners of the fire department? What do the townships pay for?

  3. Village residents pay to lease the building and all expenses through a separate tax authority? Not through their village taxes? Does that mean village taxes are going to go down? Will Constantine township stop adding fire department taxes to village residents bills since they’re already paying through the authority?

  4. They’ve been double dipping for years. Nothing’s going to stop them. Look at how they’ve set up all the authorities so you have no voice.
