Sturgis considers urban chicken ordinance

Discussion on an urban chicken ordinance for Sturgis and developing potential ballot language continued last week at the Sturgis City Commission meeting.

City officials examined ongoing changes to a proposed ordinance that laid out details on keeping chickens legally within the city limits. Commissioners were invited to weigh in on that language during the meeting.

Commissioners also asked how six pages of rules and regulations could be translated into shortened ballot language. City staff said the ballot could point to the full ordinance, of which copies would be on hand at the polling location.

The city commission and planning commission have periodically engaged in discussion, starting in 2011, about the potential for allowing chickens within the city limits. Over the past year, the discussions have been re-engaged at the urging of residents.

  1. Just say NO! There’s never enough money for enforcement and abatement. You’re never going to control the increase of rodents, insects and vermin that comes with raising chickens especially in an urban setting. Add the increase of bird diseases and you’re opening the door to more neighborhood problems.
