Man dies in Cass County crash

An Indiana man died last week following a single-car crash in Cass County’s Porter Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were called at 11:30 p.m. Friday to an area of Teasdale Lake Street, just west of Robbins Lake Road.

Behnke said a car driven by 24-year-old Mishawaka resident James Shaw was traveling at a high rate of speed, west on Teasdale Lake Street.

Authorities said Shaw lost control of the vehicle. It subsequently flipped on its top, slid about 50 yards down an embankment, hit a tree and came to rest at the bottom of the embankment.

Investigators said Shaw was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger, 23-year-old Elkhart resident, Taves Naasz, was transported to Elkhart General Hospital.

Naasz was wearing a seat belt, but Shaw was not, deputies said.
