Chad Spence sworn in

The four-year term of St. Joseph County Sheriff Chad Spence became official Thursday with a swearing-in ceremony at Sturges Young Center for the Arts.

Spence was elected sheriff during a five-man race in the primary election, topping challengers that included Jason Bingaman and Dennis Allen. Incumbent Mark Lillywhite chose to not seek re-election.

Also involved in Thursday’s ceremony was David Northrup, who will serve as Spence’s undersheriff and was sworn-in, as well.

The by-invitation event was attended by dozens of family members and friends.

Meanwhile, the seven-member St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners will be sworn in during a special meeting Tuesday. The panel features newcomer Christina Yunker.

Commissioners’ terms are for four years.

  1. Invitation only? Are not oaths of office administered in public except in an emergency?

  2. And at a private venue! How much did that cost? Psid by who?
