TR to pursue a grant for dam removal

Three Rivers municipal officials are moving forward with a plan to dismantle the Portage Plant Dam.

During their twice-a-month meeting Tuesday, Mayor Tom Lowry and commissioners agreed to partner with Portage Power Co. and pursue a state grant to finance an important step in the process.

Lowry said funding would cover 90 percent of the $100,000 cost of a feasibility study targeting critical steps – including environmental-related issues – in the potential removal process. The grant is being sought through a division of the state’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

City officials said Portage Power Co. has committed to covering the 10 percent difference, should the grant be issued.
