Cass County commissioners respond to expansion of AI facility

There are new developments in a local issue related to a potential data center in Southwest Michigan.

WWMT reports that the Cass County Board of Commissioners is responding to a bitcoin mining facility’s proposed expansion, and calling on city leaders to demand more accountability.

Located in the vicinity of downtown Dowagiac, Hyperscale Data wants to increase its power capacity to 11 times its current amount.

It operates inside the Business Center of Southwest Michigan, and hopes to build out its 30-megawatt facility to 340 megawatts to support artificial intelligence, according to WWMT.

The proposed boost is enough energy to power more than 100,000 homes.

Cass County leaders said Dowagiac residents have brought forward environmental and noise concerns, leading them to unanimously pass a resolution calling for a clear regulatory framework.

The resolution is now in the hands of each Cass County municipality.
