Fatal crash in Sherman Township

Slippery roads and speed too fast for conditions may have been factors in a two-vehicle, fatal crash last week in Sherman Township.

According to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded shortly after 6:30 p.m. Thursday to an area of Featherstone Road, near Taylor Road, following a report of a two-car crash.

Authorities said the victim, a 55-year-old Sturgis woman, whose name was not released, was in a vehicle traveling west on Featherstone Road. The vehicle lost control after it struck a deer in the roadway and slid into the path of an eastbound vehicle.

A 79-year-old woman from Sturgis was hospitalized in critical condition, according to deputies.
