Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy has labeled its recent “Birdathon” fundraiser a success.
The Land Larks team identified 122 bird species in a single day, a new team record. Their efforts contributed to a county-wide total of 188 species observed.
Along the way, several team members spotted “life birds,” including Canada Warbler, Mourning Warbler and Semipalmated Sandpiper.
The annual event raised more than $4,000 to support restoration of a prairie fen ecosystem at Marc’s Marsh Preserve, where invasive shrubs will be removed to make room for native wildflowers and wildlife habitat.
The 2026 competition took place over a 19-hour period last month in Berrien County.
