Gerald Allan “Jerry” DeWitt, age 75, of Sturgis, passed away unexpectedly early Sunday evening , November 2, 2025, at his home.
He was born September 10, 1950 in Byron Center, Michigan, a son of the late Willis and Helen (Shanahan) DeWitt.
Jerry resided most of his life in Sturgis, coming from Grand Rapids. He was a graduate of Byron Center High School with the class of 1968 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Davenport College.
On February 14, 1987, he married the love of his life, Julia Sweat, in Sturgis.
Jerry was a highly skilled diesel mechanic by trade, specializing in heavy equipment. Mechanically gifted, he could fix nearly anything and took great pride in his work. He enjoyed fishing and hunting—especially deer hunting—and tending to his vegetable garden. Jerry was happiest when working or lending a helping hand to others. Many of the residents around Klinger Lake will fondly remember his dependable handyman skills and generous spirit.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era, stationed in Germany and earning the rank of Private.
Surviving are his loving wife, Julia; children, Konni DeWitt of Florida, Richard DeWitt of Sturgis, and Doug Fireline of Howe, Indiana; his Right-Hand Man: Gage Landrum of Sturgis; sister, Bonnie Bedwell of Lake Odessa; brothers, Billy DeWitt of Belding and Donny DeWitt of White Cloud; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Cheryl Wolf.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00, Saturday, November 8th, at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard at 4:00 P.M. In honoring the family’s wishes, cremation will follow the visitation.
