Gary Mecklenburg, 88

Gary J. Mecklenburg, age 88, of Sturgis, passed away Monday afternoon, November 17, 2025, at Thurston Woods Village, surrounded by his family.

Born March 3, 1937 in Sturgis, to Julius C. “Judy” and Evelyn F. (Free) Mecklenburg, Gary was a lifelong resident and a proud graduate of Sturgis High School, class of 1956.

On September 23, 1961, he married the love of his life, Erma E. Scare in Detroit, Michigan.

Gary retired from Sutton Tool Company after 39½ years of dedicated service as a mill operator. A veteran of the United States Army, he served in Germany and earned the rank of Specialist 4th Class.

He was a longtime active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis and volunteered his time with the Salvation Army.

Gary enjoyed golf, bowling, playing cards, and traveling. Most of all, he cherished time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Erma; one daughter, Cathy (Kim) Knapp of Sturgis; two sons, Michael (Patty) Mecklenburg of St. Louis, Missouri, and Bryan (Kristin) Mecklenburg of Jenison; eight grandchildren, Audrey (Christian), Rachel (Matt), Julianne, Tara (Bret), Jack, Tia, Serena (Taylor), and Erin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Jeffrey Mecklenburg, and two sisters, Karen Rowe and Diane Mecklenburg.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 A.M. Saturday, December 6, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1320 S. Lakeview Ave., Sturgis. A memorial service celebrating Gary’s life will follow at 11:00, being officiated by his son, Bryan. Full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 and the United States Army Honor Guard. Private placement of the remains will take place in the church columbarium.

The Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.
