Donald Weitting, 85

Donald Dale Weitting, age 85, of Sturgis, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon, November 25, 2025, surrounded by his family at the Sturgis Hospital Emergency Room.

He was born on March 18, 1940 in Sturgis, a son of the late Lawrence L. and Charlotte L. (Dunham) Weitting.

Don was a lifelong Sturgis resident and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1960. He later furthered his education at Glen Oaks Community College where he earned an associate degree.

In 1962, he married the love of his life, Linda Lee Kline.

Don retired from Glen Oaks Community College following several years of dedicated service in the maintenance department. Prior to his time at Glen Oaks, he was a loyal employee of the Harter Corporation in Sturgis until the company’s closure in the 1980s, and he also farmed alongside his father and grandfather.

Don was proud to have served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Germany from 1962–1966.

Throughout his life, Don shared his love of hunting, fishing, and trapping with his many friends and family. He enjoyed traveling and took his family on memorable vacations throughout the country. Don had many hobbies and involvements, but what he cherished most was time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 63 years, Linda (Kline) Weitting; daughter, Lynette (Weitting) Mallow; son, Lawrence (Elizabeth) Weitting; grandsons, Lawrence Weitting, Jr., Colton Weitting, and Caleb (Kathleen) Mallow; granddaughter, Jael (Mitchell) Miller; five great-grandchildren; sister, Linda (Weitting) Streeter; and several nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janice (Weitting) Keeslar; and son-in-law, James Mallow.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 6th, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1108 E. Lafayette St., Sturgis, where funeral services celebrating the life of Donald D. Weitting will immediately follow at 11:00. The Rev. Tim Johnson will officiate. A graveside committal will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.

The Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.

Don was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, and he would encourage that memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, be directed to his church at 1108 E. Lafayette St., Sturgis, MI 49091.
