Michael Birkhold, 77

Michael William Birkhold, age 77, of Centreville, passed away at his home on Monday, December 1, 2025, after a long illness.  He was born in Kalamazoo on December 15, 1947, the son of William and Delores Birkhold.  Michael was a student at Portage Central High School, after that, he entered the work force.  For over 50 years, Michael was a dedicated and skilled worker in the metal industry; perfecting certain techniques in molding and fabricating.  He was employed at Continental Design in Kalamazoo, American Metal Fabrication in Three Rivers, and Roto-Finish in Kalamazoo.  On April 16, 1965, he married the love of his life, Susan Dolhay, in Kalamazoo, and the two of them would spend 60 wonderful years together.

If it had fur, feathers, or scales, Michael was involved.  He was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman.  He loved fishing with a passion, fishing the waters of St. Joseph County, South Haven and St. Jo.  Catching salmon on the Manistee River was a trip he always looked forward to.  He would often be seen in the early morning, tying flies over a cup of coffee, a skill not many know how to do.  Frog legs and snapping turtles was an acquired taste that his family had to learn to love.  Michael would often take his family mushroom hunting, searching for morels in the U.P., and then attempt to find your way out of the woods.  One of his most memorable hunts, took place in Canada, when Michael came home with a moose at 16 years old.  That moose was on display for many years at Lucky’s Bar in Centreville, where he could show it off to his friends and family.  He enjoyed listening to classic country music, watching westerns and action movies, and over-indulging his wife’s homemade blackberry pie.  Michael enjoyed the simple things in life, but nothing was more enjoyable for him than his family, especially his grandchildren, who he spoiled every chance he had.

Michael is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Susan Birkhold; his son Michael (Kelly) Birkhold, II; four grandchildren; Amy, Ashley, Cassandra, and Shelby; four great-grandchildren; Brooklyn, Adrean, Travis, and Kollin; and great-great-granddaughter, Delaney; his sister, Cheryl (Butch) Gilbert; son-in-law, Frank Racette; and many nieces, nephews, and extended families.  He was preceded in passing by his parents, William and Delores Birkhold; his brother, Patrick Birkhold; his son, Timothy Birkhold; and his daughter, Wendy Birkhold.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation is being conducted.  A private family gathering will take place, at a later date.  Condolences and memories may be expressed to his family at eickhofffuneralhome.com
