Juanita R. Hagan, a luminary in the lives of many, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 8, 2026 at the of 95, at her beloved home in Marcellus, surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 9, 1931, Juanita lived a life defined by purpose, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to nurturing others. Education, service, and advocacy were not simply passions for her—they were the core foundations of her life, guiding the way she lived, taught, and loved.
A proud graduate of Michigan State University, Juanita’s commitment to service took her beyond borders when she volunteered with the Peace Corps in Colombia from 1955 to 1957. That experience deeply shaped her worldview and strengthened her dedication to understanding people and cultures. Upon returning to the United States, she continued her education at the University of Chicago, earning a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, along with a certificate in Psychoanalysis. This added depth of understanding allowed her to connect more meaningfully with the children whose lives she so passionately guided.
Juanita dedicated her professional life to teaching inner-city youth in Chicago, where she was widely respected for her intelligence, kindness, and steadfast dedication. Although her career took her to Chicago, Marcellus was always her true home. She remained a lifelong resident, returning to the place that grounded her and brought her peace. Through patience, empathy, and quiet advocacy, she left an indelible mark on countless young lives—many of whom carried her lessons far beyond the classroom.
For approximately 75 years, Juanita made her home near Skyhawk Lake, just outside the Village of Marcellus. Swimming in its calm waters became one of her greatest joys—a place of reflection, renewal, and serenity that she cherished deeply.
Her home was also a place of gathering and connection. Inspired by Julia Child, Juanita cultivated a love for French cuisine, preparing thoughtfully crafted meals that brought family and friends together. Cooking was more than a hobby; it was an expression of love, generosity, and shared joy, often accompanied by good conversation, laughter, and a glass of dry white wine.
Juanita’s curiosity and adventurous spirit never faded. An enthusiastic world traveler, she backpacked across Europe and explored South America, immersing herself in new cultures and experiences. Well into her 80s, she continued to travel, always eager to learn, explore, and grow. Her journeys reflected her fearless zest for life and her lifelong love of discovery.
A passionate activist, Juanita stood firmly by her beliefs and lived each day with integrity. She was deeply committed to doing what was right and remaining true to herself, inspiring others through her strength, authenticity, and vibrant spirit.
She is survived by her lifelong friend and confidant, Edy, whose bond with Juanita was built on deep love and mutual respect. She also leaves behind a large and loving family, including many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, along with numerous cherished friends—all of whom were touched by her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering compassion.
Juanita was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Hagan; her mother, Eva (Baldwin) Hagan; and her sisters, Patricia Colborn and Shirley Hibbard.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, from 4:30 to 6:30d, followed by a memorial service from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, at Family First Funeral & Cremation Services in Marcellus.
In celebrating her life, we honor a remarkable legacy—one rooted in kindness, resilience, and meaningful connection. Juanita R. Hagan will be dearly missed, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
