James French, 52

James Darwin French, age 52, of Sturgis, passed away Friday evening, May 8, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born May 16, 1973 in Three Rivers, son of Peggy Heath and Darwin Woodman.

James resided in Sturgis since 1995, coming from Colon,, where he was a graduate of Colon High School with the class of 1993. On September 4, 1992, he married Elizabeth Moore in Colon. Their marriage was one of love, devotion and commitment spanning more than 33 years.

He was currently employed at Banks Hardwoods in White Pigeon. Prior to joining Banks, he worked in construction and was employed at Sturgis Iron & Metal and Parma Tube, both in Sturgis.

James enjoyed bowling, working on cars and tractors, farming and spending time outdoors. He especially cherished time spent with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife: Elizabeth French of Sturgis; children: Steven French of Sturgis, Jackie French of Indianapolis, Tim (Sarah) French of Kalamazoo, and Rebecca French of Grand Rapids; grandchildren: Owen, Jane and Sophia; sisters: Laura (Steve) Soule of Sturgis, Julie Webb of Colon, Jamie Palma of Florida, Cindy Woodman of Florida and Betty Jo French of Leonidas; brothers: Scott (Laura) French of Sturgis and Dennis (Stephanie) French of Kalamazoo; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister: Sharon Elaine Woodman.

In honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 16th at Rawson’s King Mill County Park, 29824 King Road, Leonidas. Times will be announced when confirmed.

The Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.
