Fredrick Walters, 94

Fredrick “Fred” Lavern Walters, age 94, of Constantine, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, May 18, 2026. He was born on November 6, 1931 in Jones, Michigan, the son of Elmer and Clara (Benckiser) Walters.

Following his graduation from high school, Fred proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He served as a Corporal and demolition expert and was honored to help build the Freedom Bridge where the peace treaty was signed. After returning home, Fred continued his passion for bridge construction, working for the Taber Company for four years as a bridge engineer. In 1960, he founded Walters Construction, which he owned and operated until his retirement.

On May 29, 1984, Fred married the love of his life, Lorna Oswalt, at Three Rivers Lutheran Church. Together they shared many happy years and cherished spending winters at their home in Punta Gorda, Florida, a place Fred dearly loved.

Fred was a proud member of the American Legion Post 223 in Constantine. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time with his grandchildren, and watching westerns on television. He especially loved his dogs, Zoe and his late Shih Tzu, Gidget. Above all, Fred treasured time spent with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lorna L. Walters of Constantine; children: Rita Griffin of Edwardsburg, David and Lucinda Walters of Three Rivers, Kenneth Oswalt of Centreville, Gail and Joel Cook of Constantine, Keith Oswalt of Howe, Indiana, and Robert and Carol Mansmith of Constantine; 31 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Sandy Walters of Scotts, Michigan.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Betty Lamaro and Elmer Walters.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at his home, located at 66787 Winding River Road, Constantine, Michigan 49042, on May 30, 2026 at 1:00.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to support Veterans organizations.

Ray Funeral Services, 305 Rock River Ave., Three Rivers, Michigan, has been entrusted with Fred’s care.
