Mary M. Spealman, age 98, of Mendon, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Beacon Kalamazoo Hospital following a brief illness. She was born on April 9, 1928 in Mendon, the daughter of Robert and Martha (Rench) McClain. Mary attended Mendon High School and was a member of the Class of 1947. On February 8, 1947, she married William “Bill” Spealman, and together they shared 53 years of marriage until his passing in 2000.
Friends. Family. Faith.
These three words were the foundation of Mary’s life. She was known for helping others in need, in any form and at any time. For more than 30 years, she worked as a realtor with the Century 21 Arrowhead office in Three Rivers, helping families find their forever homes. Mary was involved with the Mendon Kiwanis Club, working behind the scenes and helping with the annual Dust Off Car Show and the Kiwanis Showboat. She was a member of the Mendon Women’s Club and the Mendon Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #154.
For many decades, Mary devoted countless hours to the Mendon United Methodist Church, coordinating funeral luncheons, helping with Kiwanis dinners and 4×4 meals, and participating in the Emmaus 4th Day Group. Somehow, in between all of her involvements, she still found time to enjoy gardening, planting flowers, sewing, and caring for those around her.
Mary’s remarkable independence and zest for life never faded. She believed in staying active, staying involved, and staying connected to the people around her. Whether she was volunteering, tending to her flowers, attending community events, or checking in on a friend, she embraced each day with purpose and enthusiasm.
She especially treasured the friendships she built over the years. Her weekly bridge club was one of her favorite traditions, bringing together two things she loved most: good friends and a little friendly competition. While Mary was known for her kindness and generosity, anyone who sat across the bridge table from her knew she played to win.
She was also known for her sweet tooth. Family and friends could usually count on finding cookies in the house, and Mary firmly believed that a cookie a day was good for you. After 98 years, few were willing to challenge her medical advice. Sharing coffee, conversation, and a cookie with family and friends was one of life’s simple pleasures she never outgrew.
When reflecting on her life, Mary shared these words:
“I’ve always loved having people around, and the joy I felt in my life was much more from having friends and family. Being involved with Bill’s occupation. Camping parties at our house with friends. Florida vacations and the trip to California on our 25th wedding anniversary. Witnessing my grandchildren being born and seeing them grow up.”
Mary is survived by her son, Tom (Connie) Spealman; two grandchildren, Travis (Nicole) Spealman and Tiffani (Max) Williams; and many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Martha McClain; her husband, Bill Spealman; her children, Gerald Spealman and Deborah Spealman; and her siblings, Henry, Robert, Stanley, Donald, Ernest, Martha, Angelene, and Charles.
Visitation for Mary will be held on Monday, June 1, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Eickhoff Funeral Home (311 W. Main St., Mendon, MI 49072). Visitation will also take place on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Mendon United Methodist Church (320 W. Main St., Mendon, MI 49072), with funeral services beginning at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Carl Litchfield. Burial will follow at Mendon Cemetery.

Mary spent nearly a century building a life rich in friendships, family, faith, service, and community. Her greatest wealth was never measured in dollars, but in the relationships she cultivated and the lives she touched. If she were able to leave us with one final recommendation, it might be to call a friend, spend time with family, lend a hand to someone who needs it, and don’t forget to have a cookie. After all, it seemed to work pretty well for 98 years.
