Darlene Sharon Hempel, age 76 of Portage, MI passed away at her home peacefully after a brief illness. She was born in Fort Wayne on February 9, 1950 the daughter of Milford and Sirelda Ross. Darlene attended Lakeland High School and was part of the 1969 graduating class.
Darlene owned and operated Darlene Hempel Trucking for many years. She also waited tables in her free time, and assisting others in need as a CNA. Darlene was a sucker for a good soap opera and gossip, listening to Kenny G and Rod Stewart, bowling, and displaying her fine china and random collections. Darlene loved tending to her yard of 54 years, and enjoying a delicious vodka soda after the hard work was done.
Darlene is survived by her daughter, April Hempel; her granddaughter, August Jarzambek; four siblings; David (Nancy) Ross, Barb Paalman, Fannie Lower, and Ben (Vicki) Ross; and many nieces, nephews, and extended families. She was preceded in passing by her son, John Hempel II; and four siblings; Marty, George, Shirley, and Larry.
