The Three Rivers Lions Club has selected Jo Moyer as their 2010 Citizen of the Year. I’m sure you have all heard about this already. For those of you uninformed, the Citizen of the Year banquet will be Tuesday, April 27, at A Place in Time in downtown Three Rivers. The evening’s celebration begins with a social hour at six, with dinner and program following. If you’d like to be a part of this festive occasion, tickets may be purchased from Lion Sally Cotton at Southern Michigan Bank and Trust at the main office downtown. The cost for tickets is $20, and they will NOT be available at the door the evening of the banquet. Jo has been a volunteer at TR Health for many years and would love to have her friends join her for this memorable evening.
The Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) invites everyone to their 8th annual fundraising Mostaccioli Dinner/Auction, Saturday, April 17, at the Three Rivers High School cafeteria. The all-you-can-eat pasta dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 P.M., followed by an auction, with items donated by local merchants. The cost for the dinner is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. A dinner ticket is not required if you’d like to just attend the auction. ARF was founded in April 1998, for the purpose of recognizing animal welfare needs in St. Joseph County. To date, over $100,000 has been raised and re-invested back into the community for animal-related causes. The group supports spay/neuter program assistance to those in financial need, public and in-school animal education programs, and pet food distribution at local food banks and COA meal sites, along with many other animal-related issues. I prefer “Minor League” sports to “Major League”. This past Saturday evening, I accompanied my wife to the final regular season home game for the Kalamazoo K-Wings hockey team. Our main purpose in attending was to present the “Most Popular Player” trophy to a member of the K-Wings team. Radio station WLKM sponsors the award and carries all of the K-Wings games on 95.9 FM. If you’ve never attended a K-Wings game, you don’t know what you’re missing. The minor league players play for the love of the game, and yes, they would all like to someday be a part of the “Big” leagues. One can have a very fun-filled evening for very few dollars. Congratulations go out to Tyler Willis for being voted the “Most Popular Player” for six years in a row. If you’re interested in learning more about the K-Wings, you can follow their journey through the playoffs by listening to them on the radio, or watch for Mark McGlothen’s comments in the sports section of this newspaper. Mark probably has FORGOTTEN more about hockey than I’ll ever KNOW.
Baseball season begins this week. That means that the Kalamazoo Kings will soon be playing in Kalamazoo. Yes, this is another minor league team, but it’s also a perfect way to get Out and About without driving too far. The American dream of taking the family out to a good ballgame still does exist and you don’t have to take a second mortgage out on the house to do so.
Another way to get Out and About would be to check out the St. Joe County Conservation Club on Featherstone Road east of Centreville. There are activities that will fit just about anyone’s interest, from trap and skeet shooting to archery. For those interested in taking sportsman classes, they have a variety to choose from. The weather is once again the type that makes you want to get outdoors and enjoy everything that Three Rivers and all of St. Joseph County have to offer.
