Out and About – Week of October 10

I was fortunate to spend most of last weekend in Mackinaw City. The trip up and back was filled with fall colors. Unfortunately, I made the trip alone, so I couldn’t share the excitement of the colors with anyone. It’s sort of like taking a trip to Yellowstone or Cedar Point by yourself. You really need someone with you to share in the beauty or excitement. Anyway, I mention the colorful adventure because next Sunday, October 16, we will have our own “Fall Color Tour” right here in the Three Rivers area. From 11 A.M. until 5 P.M., we will have the opportunity to travel the area and take in the sights that abound right here in our own backyard.

The Fall Color Tour was started in 1950 by the Three Rivers Chamber of Commerce, and the color and beauty of Southwestern Michigan has been celebrated ever since. Everyone is invited to drive and enjoy a variety of destinations and activities that have been chosen for the tour. The Color Tour is hosted by local businesses, St. Joseph County Parks, and the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce. You may pick up a guide at the Chamber office, 57 North Main Street in historic downtown Three Rivers.

On Sunday, October 23, at 6 P.M., the Three Rivers High School Aristocrats will perform at the First Presbyterian Church, 320 North Main Street, Three Rivers. All are invited to attend this FREE event, and a free-will offering will be taken to support the assistance that is provided by the church to the community. Refreshments will be provided after the performance. If you’ve never attended a performance by the Aristocrats, don’t let this opportunity pass you by.

The historic Riviera Theatre in Three Rivers always has plenty of events listed on their marquee. From movies and operas to live performances, there’s always something for everyone. The Riviera has teamed up with the Three Rivers Community Players for the production of The Rocky Horror Show, with two performances on October 29, at 7 P.M. and again at 11:59 P.M. The production will include props for lively audience participation, so outside props will not be permitted. Admission is $15. For tickets and more information, please phone (269)278-8068, or visit the theatre’s website at www.trrriviera.com.

This is one of the times of the year when volunteers are out picking up litter along the shoulders of our highways. As you’re out driving, please be watchful for these people who are giving of their time and picking up after those who use the roadside as their personal waste receptacle.

Trinity Episcopal Church, 321 North Main Street in Three Rivers, will host their annual fall rummage sale this Thursday and Friday, October 13 and 14. Hours for Thursday are from 7 A.M. until 6 P.M., and Friday’s hours are from 9 A.M. until noon. For your selection, you’ll find clothing for adults and children, toys, household items, plus an assortment of miscellaneous items. Friday is bag day, which means that everything that you can fit into a bag will cost only $1.

Ducks Unlimited will host their annual dinner/fundraiser this Thursday, October 13, at 6 P.M. at the UAW Hall, located at the intersection of Hoffman Road and US-131, west of Three Rivers. The cost is $25 per person, or $45 per couple. Proceeds will go to conserving North America’s waterfowl habitats. For more information, please call (269)506-7906.

The March to the Sea Camp #135 of the Sons of Union Veterans will conduct a rededication ceremony for the restored Grand Army of the Republic monument in Constantine. The monument is located at the South Washington Street Park, which is in the 400 block. This all takes place Saturday, October 22, at 1 P.M. Here’s another opportunity to take the entire family out for an historic event.

See you Out and About!
