Out and About – Week of December 5th

Seventy years ago this week, the empire of Japan awakened a sleeping giant known as The United States of America, when they attacked Pearl Harbor It was definitely a day that went, as President Roosevelt said, “down in infamy”. It was a learning experience for both the empire of Japan and the USA. Please take a moment to pause and remember those men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice seventy years ago

You still have time to send your Christmas presents to loved ones via the U.S. Postal Service. I hope that you get this done as soon as possible. Please don’t wait until December 20 and then not understand why your parcel might not get there on time. A special thank you goes out to the postal workers, whether you work inside or outside, for your dedication in getting the mail out. Also, speaking of postal workers, we are due for some heavy snowfalls for the next several months, so to quote our mail carrier, “No trail, no mail.”

Sorry for not mentioning this earlier, but Wednesday, December 7th, the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis is hosting a Homemade Lasagna Dinner from 5 to 6:30 P.M. in their fellowship hall. Included with the lasagna, you’ll receive garlic toast, salad, a drink, and dessert. If you don’t care to dine in, you may order carry-out. Tickets are available at the door for $6 for adults and $4 for children ages 6 through 12; children five and under may dine at no charge. Proceeds from this dinner will go toward local church projects. The First United Methodist Church of Sturgis is located at 200 Pleasant Street.

This Saturday, December 10, the Friends of the Mendon Library will host a Christmas open house at the Mendon Library, 314 West Main Street, in Mendon. The open house will run from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M., and will feature Country Farm Reindeer and the Wind Works Musicians.

Jade’s Hope will host a Christmas Fun Carnival and Film Festival this Saturday, December 10, at the Riviera Theatre in historic downtown Three Rivers. The festivities will run from 1 to 5 P.M. Jade’s Hope is a mission to give abused children a chance to reclaim their childhood. For more information, please call the Riviera at (269)278-8078.

The Three Rivers firefighters are in the final stages of preparing to give to those in need. Every year the “Firefighters for Santa” gather the donations that have been dropped off at city hall and get them ready for delivery. These donations include non-perishable food products and toys. The monetary donations go toward the purchase of toys. Everyone can be a part of this “giving project”. Take your donation to city hall and someone there will point you in the right direction. A day or two before Christmas, the firefighters will load the gifts on to their “sleighs” and head out to brighten the faces of those who otherwise wouldn’t have a Christmas. It doesn’t take much time or effort to bring a smile to a child’s face.

This is the season for giving. I try to be as generous as possible when supporting the many organizations seeking donations. I find it easier and more rewarding to donate time, rather than money. To each his own. There are so many groups out there that need our support, so that they can do as much as they can to provide for those less fortunate. As mentioned, this is the season for giving. If you aren’t blessed monetarity, perhaps you have some extra time to give.

Happy shopping, and I’ll see you Out and About.
