Out and About – Week of January 16th

DeAnn Hollis has been quoted as saying, “The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others.” I am a strong supporter of the act of volunteering. I volunteer as often as I can and wish that I could do more, but my plate is full and there just isn’t any more room. You see volunteers all over. One of the bigger groups works at the hospital, and I’ve mentioned before that they do a marvelous job. Most of the hospital volunteers are living their golden years doing what they can to stay young. Another place where you’ll see volunteers is the Commission on Aging (COA), 103 South Douglas Avenue, in Three Rivers. It’s sort of like seeing senior citizens taking care of their own. The COA is always in need of volunteers. It’s one of those jobs in which the chances of getting fired are pretty slim. The next time you see people volunteering anywhere, thank them for doing what they love to do. Better still, ask them what you can do to help out. The only pay volunteers receive is the satisfaction that they have made a difference in someone else’s life. You couldn’t ask for a better reward than that.

I don’t care if you’re in perfect shape, everyone should set aside some time to do some sort of exercise. As you get older, this is especially important. You don’t move as quickly and probably don’t get Out and About as much as you did when you were a few years younger. The Three Rivers Senior Center just might have what you’ve been looking for. Every Monday and Wednesday, from 11 to 11:45A.M., there is a balance exercise class consisting of Low-Impact Exercise. This is designed for everyone, so that you can stay healthy and having fun doing so. Donna and Jackie are the instructors, and they both look forward to working with you at your own pace. Please phone the Three Rivers Senior Center at (269)279-8083.

“New Beginnings”, a grief support group here in Three Rivers, will meet this Thursday, January 19, at 11:45A.M. The venue is Boundary Waters, inside Lowry’s Books and More, in historic downtown Three Rivers. If you have recently lost a loved one or are experiencing some other form of grief, this would be a good opportunity to meet and discuss your problems with others experiencing the same feelings. You should never feel alone. There are others who share your feelings and are looking for the same results. Some of those people will be at Boundary Waters this Thursday morning.

“The Journey”, another support group, will also meet this Thursday, January 19, only they’ll gather at Riverview Manor, 55378 Wilbur Road, just north of Three Rivers. Their meeting time is from 12:30 to 1:30 P.M. Cookies and coffee will be served. To get more information, you’re invited to call (269)279-7441.

This Saturday, January 21, the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF), will host a pancake breakfast from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M., at Trinity Episcopal Church, 321 North Main Street, Three Rivers. The all-you-can-eat breakfast will consist of pancakes and sausage. The cost for adults is $10, and children ages 10 and under can eat for $2.

Dining out was a special treat at one time. If you are a family of only two, dining out can be a lot more economical. If you have Senior Citizen meal tickets, it’s the only way to go. These tickets can be purchased at the COA and are a real bargain. The eating establishments that honor these tickets in Three Rivers include Mr. B’s Dairy Bar, Main Street Cafe, American Legion Post #170, Matt & Mike’s Eatery, and Goldie’s. These meals are usually more than you can eat and well-balanced. Should you decide to patronize one of these restaurants, be sure to thank them for participating in this program.

The NFL playoffs are in their final weeks. The Riviera Theatre will be the perfect venue to enjoy watching Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday, February 5. You’ll be able to enjoy all the action live in high definition on the large movie screen. No need to pay $1500 to attend the big game when you can watch it with your friends for FREE.

See you Out and About!
