In their first meeting since last year’s postseason encounter won by the Kalamazoo Wings, the Reading Royals used a solid effort in the second period to defeated the K-Wings 4-1 Friday night at the Sovereign Center.
Dictating the action in the opening 20 minutes by outshooting Reading 15-4, Kalamazoo not only generated many scoring chances, but the lone goal of the period. Setup by a screen in front of goaltender Paul Dainton, Harry Young’s right-point slap shot 5:11 into the period earned the defenseman his first goal of the season and for the K-Wings a 1-0 lead.
Storming out of the locker room in the second period, the Royals sent an onslaught of shots towards Maxime Clermont. After only four shots in the first period, Reading pelted Clermont with 12 shots in the first five minutes of the second.
During that five-minute barrage, the Royals pulled even with a power-play strike by Ryan Cruthers (11th).
Another man-advantage opportunity gave the Royals the lead late in the period, when Tyler Brenner (2nd) tipped a Dale Mitchell shot 16:31into the stanza to record the eventual game-winner.
Making the score 3-1, John Scrymgeour knocked in the insurance marker on his third goal of the season 9:56 into the third period.
Yannick Tifu (10th) capped of the scoring notching an empty-netter in the final minute.
Kalamazoo will conclude their three-game road swing tomorrow Saturday, January 21st with a 7p.m. encounter against the Trenton Titans at the Sun National Bank Center.
The K-Wings will return to Wings Stadium on Friday, January 27th with a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the Cincinnati Cyclones on Culver’s Night and Frugal Fan Friday, featuring $1 Beers, $1 Pepsi and $1 Hot Dogs.
