Out and About – Week of May 14th

I’m hoping that this past weekend, all you mothers were surrounded by your children and reminded of how much you are loved by all. If this did happen, you are to be commended for doing a great job of parenting. Savor the time. In a perfect world, every day would be Mother’s Day.

With the weather being as nice as it has been lately, one might be tempted to partake in long and leisurely walks. If you’re working, a brief walk at lunch time might add value to the rest of your day. The Three Rivers American Cancer Society Relay for Life has a great idea. This past Friday was the first of three “Fund” walks being held in Three Rivers. The remaining two will be Wednesday, May 23, and Friday, June 8. From 11:30 to 1:30 P.M. on these dates, individuals may walk through the Three Rivers downtown and city parks while, at the same time, raising money for this year’s Relay for Life. Individuals or groups are invited to walk during their lunch hour through the downtown-Michigan Avenue-Scidmore Park area. Registration will be open from 11:30 to 1:15 P.M. in front of Southern Michigan Bank and Trust, 88 North Main Street, Three Rivers. Participants may start wherever they want but should stop by the bank to register when they pass by. Participants pay a minimum $5 donation when they resister for that day, and they’ll receive a tag to show that they are a “Fund Walk Walker”. Everyone is invited to take along a sack lunch to enjoy in the park, or they can stop by one of the restaurants along the route.

If you’re interested in helping with event logistics, or if you need more details, or if you wish to pre-register your group/business or team, you may contact Mary Dechow at (269)244-5529, or Lynn Crego Crose of Century 21 Real Estate at (269)273-9561.

I feel I must take a moment to apologize for my generation. I feel we did a lousy job of parenting. Our parents taught us manners and to respect our elders. If Mr. Blank, my high school principal, were speaking, I’d better be taking notes. If my father told me to do something, I’d never think of asking him why. Sassing my parents never entered my mind. My generation made the mistake of never passing on to our children some of the ideals set forth by our parents. As I venture out and about, I rarely see gentlemen opening doors for ladies. At a restaurant I’ve seen children sitting in chairs waiting with their parents to be seated, while an elderly person stands. You can’t blame the youngsters. They were never taught manners. I guess chivalry and manners are just history. That’s truly a shame.

Three Rivers Community Schools and the Carnegie Center for the Arts are showcasing the creative talents of our students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Their artwork is on display through Saturday, May 26. Carnegie Center hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M., and Saturdays from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. The Carnegie Center is another venue where admission is FREE.

The Three Rivers Community Garden, located behind Huss School, at the corner of Broadway and Eighth Street, Three Rivers, has been a work in progress since March 29. This organic garden is for everyone, and all food grown will be given away. If you love gardening but don’t have a garden of your own, this is a great opportunity to work the soil and reap the harvest. Beginning June 4 through September 22, the scheduled work hours will be Mondays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 P.M. Saturday hours will run from 8 until 11 A.M. All are welcome to participate.

The Domestic and Sexual Abuse Service Center will host “Walk-A-Mile in Her Shoes” event at the Three Rivers High School track, located at Armstrong Field in Three Rivers. The date is Saturday, May 19 from 10 A.M. until 2 P.M. For more information, rates, and registration deadlines, visit the DSAS website at www.dasasmi.org., or phone (269) 273-6154.

As you’re out walking in the Three Rivers area, if you see some litter near your path, stop and pick it up and dispose of it in a nearby receptacle. Bending over and picking up litter is good exercise and it helps keep our neighborhoods clean. It’s also good for the soul.

See you Out and About!
