Out and About – Week of September 3rd

Today is the first day of school. Where did the summer go? It seems like Water Festival was just a couple of weeks ago. I’m not sure how many high school students read this column, but I’d like to offer some friendly advice to those who do. Enjoy your high school years. Study hard, take advantage of the many extra-curricular activities available, and enjoy your friends. The years will pass quickly, and the education is free to you. After graduation, you’ll enter the “real” world, and these years will be but memories.

For the rest of us, be ever on the alert for the school buses out there. They are transporting precious cargo, and safety is the most important issue. Give the bus drivers time and space.

Anyone having used eyeglasses, please don’t just throw them away. The Three Rivers Lions Club will gather them and turn them in for sorting and distribution to those in need. Here’s a listing of drop- off points in Three Rivers, where you may drop off your used and unwanted glasses:

Lowry’s Books and More downtown on Main Street.

Fred’s Pharmacy, located inside Harding’s on West Michigan Avenue.

City Hall, in the lobby.

Three Rivers Senior Center, in the Library building, on West Michigan, at the Douglas Avenue intersection.

Three Rivers Specialty Clinic, on the campus of Three Rivers Health.

Three Rivers High School, in the Principal’s office.

Sussex Vision on North Main Street.

This Thursday, September 6, at 8 A.M., the Carnegie Center for the Arts will host a FREE informational session on the Michigan Main Street Program and its benefits for Three Rivers. Free coffee and donuts will be available for those attending. This session is sponsored by the Downtown Development Authority, the Carnegie Center, and the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce.

Next Saturday, September 8, everyone is invited to the Constantine Harvest Festival, in Constantine, from 11AM to 6 PM. The festival starts with a Fire Department Pancake Breakfast at 7:30AM. There will be something for every member of the family: bingo for the adults, and games, face painting, pony rides, magic show, and much more for children of all ages. The Sturgis Motorcycle Toys for Tots will even do a special run. DJ Ollie will even be there providing the musical entertainment.

Unless you’ve been spending a lot of time in a cave somewhere, you should all know that the St. Joseph County Grange Fair will be up and running in Centreville, from September 16 to 22. There are brochures available throughout the county, and you may also check www.CentrevilleFair.com.

To really get Out and About, one should have a car at her/his disposal. Car ownership takes a lot of responsibility. To insure that your car lasts longer, make sure that it is properly maintained. The newer models use synthetic oils that last 7500 miles or more. This means that it could be a waste of money to have your oil changed every 3000 miles. Fifteen years ago, this was the recommended thing to do. Check your owner’s manual, or check with a reliable auto mechanic, to see how often it is recommended to have your auto’s oil changed. It’s also a good idea to have your tires rotated every time you change your oil. You’ll never appreciate your car as much as you will when it is in the shop for repairs that could have been prevented with proper maintenance.

Something that you probably have often wondered: Many years ago in Scotland, a new game was invented. It was ruled “Gentlemen Only….Ladies Forbidden”…and thus, the word GOLF entered into the English language. Who says you can’t learn anything by reading this column?

See you Out and About!
