River cleanup has large turnout

The largest turnout for a St. Joseph County Conservation District river cleanup this summer helped collect about 400 pounds of debris from the Fawn River last weekend.

Saturday’s effort along a 5.2-mile stretch between Sevison Road in Florence Township and Water Street Park in the village of Constantine drew 23 volunteers. Jen Miller, administrator for the Centreville-based conservation district, said seven of the volunteers represented the Constantine Rotary Club.

Larger items recovered from the river included a two-foot floor safe, three tires and a metal rim. In all, seven bags of trash were collected. The bags included a significant quantity of plastic, aluminum and glass cans and bottles.

The fifth of seven cleanup efforts this summer takes place Aug. 10, when a 2.7-mile stretch of the Rocky River will be cleaned between Bent and Flatbush roads in Flowerfield Township. As always, volunteers are welcome to join.
