The St. Joseph County Road Commission can continue to count on the voter-approved 1 mill it has relied on the past 20 years, as it was renewed for a 10-year period Tuesday.
A request for an additional two mills, however, met a different fate in the primary election. The request for additional mills was defeated by a 56 to 44 percent margin. The additional mills would have generated about $3.8 million annually for repairs of county, city and village roads, as well as bridges countywide.
However, the renewal of the 1 mill – passed by a margin of almost 2-to-1 – will maintain a $1.9 annual source of funding for the Centreville-based agency.
