The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners has agreed to provide additional funding to support a proposed trail project designed to run between Three Rivers and Fabius Township.
At the request of Lindsay Oswald, a member of the River Country Recreational Authority, the commission committed $23,400.
Coupled with $5,000 offered by the city of Three Rivers Tuesday, the proposed trail now has $175,000, enough funding for it to qualify for a matching grant from the J.A. Woollam Foundation.
Once fully secured, the money will go toward development of a non-motorized-use trail, which is projected to be built in 2016 and equal about 2 1/2 miles. It is slated to run between the campus of Three Rivers Health at its east end and Roberts Road to Meyer Broadway Park at its west edge.
Oswald estimated the full project will cost between $650,000 and $700,000. She said a Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund grant will be sought, as it could yield up to $300,000, she said.
