K-Wings take two of three over weekend

The Kalamazoo Wings (4-5-1-0) headed into Sunday afternoon’s contest with the Fort Wayne Komets (6-3-0-0) on a two-game winning streak.
On Friday night, the K-Wings outlasted the Wheeling Nailers (4-4-0-0) by a score of 4-3. Dane Fox, Adam Phillips (2) and Ludwig Blomstrand scored in the winning effort.
Traveling from West Virginia to Indiana, the K-Wings battled the Komets on Saturday night, defeating them by a score of 6-4. The two teams exchanged goals in first two periods of the game, ending the second intermission deadlocked at three goals apiece.
Tyler Shattock, Steve McCarthy and Dane Fox scored the first three goals of the game.
Near the midway point of the third period, the K-Wings exploded for three goals in a span of two minutes and 29 seconds, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Goals were scored by Shattock, Justin Taylor and Fox. The Komets added a goal later in the period, but were denied on all remaining attempts.
Joel Martin appeared in his 500th career professional game. Shattock registered a three point game with two goals and an assist. It was Kalamazoo’s first win of the season in three tries against Fort Wayne. Kalamazoo went 0/5 on the power play and was 2/4 on the penalty kill.
The K-Wings and Komets faced-off again on Sunday, this time at Wings Event Center
The Komets controlled the majority of the game, leading 3-0 after the first two periods.
With the score 4-0 with just over five minutes to play, the K-Wings offense came to life, scoring a pair of goals in a span of 11 seconds.
Charlie Vasaturo and Alex Mallet scored for the K-Wings.
The Komets ended any hope of a K-Wings comeback by scoring an empty-net goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.
The K-Wings will be home again on Tuesday night as they host the Manchester Monarchs, in their first-ever visit to Wings Event Center. Faceoff is set for 7:00 pm.
