Principal: Boy fatally struck after attending youth group

A school principal says a 10-year-old boy who died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in Kalamazoo County had just been at a youth group gathering.

Police in Kalamazoo Township say Daniel Sluiter was trying to cross Wednesday night in an area where there was no crosswalk or stoplight. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Conditions were described as dark and rainy.

Adam Sterenberg, principal Tree of Life school in Kalamazoo, says Daniel was with his older brother at the time he was struck. Sterenberg says Daniel had been a student at the school for two years and counselors and chaplains were on hand Thursday.

Police say the 52-year-old Kalamazoo man who was driving the vehicle wasn’t injured.  (AP)
