Update – Title IX

State Rep. Aaron Miller this week voted to require Michigan’s public colleges and universities to be transparent with Title IX reporting or face a 10-percent reduction in future state funding.

The updated requirement is part of budget approved by the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education, upon which Miller serves.

Title IX prohibits sex discrimination at educational institutions that receive federal funding and the 15 public universities in Michigan are required to submit reports to the state pertaining to sexual assaults on campus.

The subcommittee also approved a 1-percent state funding increase to all institutions that keep tuition and fee increases under 3.8 percent or $490 per student.

House Bill 5571 advances to the House Appropriations Committee.
