Search for Venus Stewart’s body comes to an end

An eight-year mystery into the disappearance and presumed death of a Colon Township woman came to an end Monday in Kalamazoo County’s Fulton Township.

State police said Doug Stewart agreed to lead authorities to the location where he buried his wife, Venus Stewart, in April 2010. Authorities said Stewart was released Monday to the custody of state police at the Saginaw Correctional Facility, and transported to the location that police, investigators and volunteers had been hoping to discover since her disappearance.

The location of the 32-year-old woman’s shallow grave was described as being heavily wooded, south of the community of Fulton.

Stewart was sentenced to life in prison in April 2011 following a jury trial in St. Joseph County Circuit Court.
