Road commission considers covered bridge options

The St. Joseph County Road Commission is considering seeking a grant that would pay 95 percent of $7 million for development of a new bridge to go alongside Langley Covered Bridge.

During last week’s road commission meeting, it was announced that an engineering study determined that the bridge can be used as-is for about two more years. The agency has been considering making the bridge a pedestrian bridge and putting a new bridge next to it.

Road commissioner Eric Shafer said concerns he heard from opponents of the plan centered on spending the money to build a new bridge.

Shafer said it would be important to be getting the opinion of the St. Joseph County Commission before moving forward with a new-bridge proposal.

Two thousand vehicles a day travel through the covered bridge.
