Sturgis police make arrest following pursuit

Sturgis police arrested a convicted felon last week following a brief pursuit.

According to a department media release, officers attempted to stop a vehicle at 2:30 p.m. Thursday on Broadus Street near Progress Street after officers noticed an expired registration on the vehicle he was driving.

The vehicle accelerated and its driver disobeyed a stop sign after police signaled for him to pull over. As the vehicle turned onto Progress Street, the driver threw an item out the passenger’s side window, authorities said. Officers later found the item was an unregistered handgun.

The 39-year-old man eventually stopped and was charged with numerous felony and misdemeanor offenses, police said, adding that he was recently released from incarceration.
