Police find explosive during traffic stop

Two White Pigeon men were arrested last week after police found an explosive device in their vehicle.

Ronald Palmer Jr., 30, and Donald Lucas, 34, face charges of possession of methamphetamine, carrying a concealed weapon and transportation of explosives, according to authorities.

About 3:45 p.m. Friday, White Pigeon police stopped a pickup on Dickenson Road, between Kalamazoo Street and U.S. 131, to investigate possible civil infractions.

Officers became suspicious when Palmer and Lucas exhibited what authorities called “deceptive” behavior.

Officers were given permission to search the vehicle and subsequently found a machete, methamphetamine and an improvised explosive device.

Police blocked a stretch of Dickenson Road and notified the Michigan State Police bomb unit. Using a robot, the unit rendered the device harmless and collected it for evidence.

Police said the device was designed to cause injury.
