K-Wings drop pair to Allen Americans

The Kalamazoo Wings (12-18-4-0) traveled to the Lone Star State this past weekend to take on the West Division Leading Allen Americans (26-7-6-1).

After trailing the Americans 2-0 after the first period, the K-Wings came back with a pair of their own to tie the game 2-2 at the end of the second period.

Zach Diamontoni and Zach Saar scored for the K-Wings.  The goal by Diamontoni was his seventh of the season and Saar’s second.

Neither team scored in the third period, prompting the teams to head to overtime where the American’s Gabriel Gagne scored the game winner just 1:15 into OT.

The two teams met up again the following night, doubling the goals they scored on Friday night.

Sadly, for the K-Wings, the American’s came out on top once again.

Aaron Thow put the K-Wings on the board in the first period as he scored a power play goal.  The Americans added a goal in the last minute of the period to tie the game 1-1.

The Americans took a 3-1 lead midway into the second period before Kyle Blaney cut the lead in half with his eighth goal of the season later in the period.

Continuing their climb back, Ben Wilson scored his third of the season seven minutes into the third period and Zach Saar scored his second goal in as many nights to give the K-Wings a one-goal lead with ten minutes remaining in the game. The goal by Saar was scored on the power play.

Showing why they are the best in the West, the Americans scored two goals in a span of two minutes and added an empty-net goal later in the period to take a 6-4 victory over the K-Wings.

The K-Wings return home for three games this week, their only games at home in the month of January.

On Wednesday night, the K-Wings host the Florida Everblades. Known as “2-6-9” night, the K-Wings offer $2 beer and pop, $6 wings baskets and $9 tickets.

On Friday, the Wheeling Nailers come to town on “Yooper Night”. The first 1,000 fans will receive a K-Wings Chook Hat,  $2 beers, sodas and hot dogs. The Everblades return to Wings Event Center on Saturday night which is also Spongebob Squarepants night. Spongebob himself will be on hand for the game and the K-Wings will be wearing special Spongebob Squarepants jerseys which will be auctioned off following the game.   All games begin at 7 PM.
