Well tests show contaminants

Contaminants above the acceptable health limit were detected in one of a dozen wells tested near White Pigeon Paper Company, officials from the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency announced last week.

Paul Andriaachi, environmental health director for the agency, said the test was one of a dozen conducted two weeks ago after discovery of PFAS at the site. Andriaachi said he expects the results from the other tests shortly.

A public meeting has been scheduled for March 19 at White Pigeon Fire Department to discuss the issue.

The tested area is on the south side of the village bordered on the east by Kalamazoo Street and goes south to Pigeon River from River Street.

The first review identified some homes connected to municipal water so they don’t have wells, Andriaachi said. Homes tested were ones in which permission to test was obtained to take well-water samples.

The health department is attempting to contact other homeowners, some of whom are in the area only during the summer.
