Township seats on August ballot

Filing deadline for township candidates appearing on the August primary ballot was Tuesday. According to St. Joseph County Clerk Lindsay Oswald, here is a list of townships that have contested races.

All seats are four-year terms.

In Fabius Township, a two-way race for supervisor features Ken Linn and current trustee Dan Wilkins. Current supervisor John Kroggel is not seeking re-election.

Florence Township Supervisor Gordon Evilsizor is giving up his seat to run for sheriff.

As a result, a two-person contest for Evilsizor’s successor features candidates currently not on the board: Sarah Beckle and Tim Carls.

In Leonidas Township, incumbent supervisor Bernard Saxman is being challenged by Fulton Road neighbor and current trustee David Moore.

The most crowded ballot in August will be in Lockport Township, as all incumbents are being challenged.

Supervisor Mark Major is being contested by Eric Shafer. Meanwhile, six people are vying for two trustee seats. The candidates are incumbent Theresa Gherna-Ankney, and Jeff Ankney, David Cooper, Rick Daniels, Donna Grubbs and Glenn Wegner.

Incumbent Paul Bungart is not seeking re-election.

Clerk candidates will square off in November, as Christy Trammell is the Republican candidate and Penny Ream represents the Democratic party.

The same situation exists for treasurer, as incumbent Mike Friesner, a Republican, will face Democrat Elvontio Peterson in November.

In Mottville Township, incumbent supervisor Brenda Hagen is being contested by Mark Ripplinger.

Another race involving the supervisor post is in Nottawa Township, where incumbent Dave Peterson and challenger Roland Eby will vie for the seat.

In Park Township, a two-person contest for clerk features Lari Roberts and Katie Sweeney. Pat Henderson is not seeking re-election.
