Out and About – Week of September 7th

Rejoice, rejoice! The kids are back in school. You “stay-at-home moms” may now reclaim your houses. Parents may now work on paying off those charges that were made in order to provide all of the back-to-school clothes and other necessities. If there are any students who read this column, enjoy the new school year. Apply yourselves and study and learn to the best of your abilities. If you’re not in college and still in K-12, absorb as much as you can from what is given to you as far as education is concerned. Your parents are paying for this part of your education through tax dollars. Don’t waste this time and, above all, don’t waste your teacher’s time by not paying attention in class. Those who don’t do well in school will only learn to say, “For here or to go?” To those of you who are teachers, your job is probably the most important job in the entire world, because without teachers, there would be no other jobs. I thank you for your dedication to your career. You love what you do, and I know for a fact that you’re not in it for the money and glory.

Labor Day weekend is now in the books. I hope that those who traveled, did so without incident and returned home with many happy memories worth sharing. Those of you who opted to stay home, I hope you were able to partake of HarmonyFest right here in downtown Three Rivers. A special thank you to the HarmonyFest Committee. Your hard work and dedication are very much appreciated. Karen Hay, you and your crew deserve many accolades. I thank you for your contribution to the community.

The white shoes are put away for another year, but we still have plenty of fun things to look forward to before the weather turns nasty. The St. Joseph County Grange Fair will be here in a couple of weeks, as will the Three Rivers Homecoming, followed by the annual Color Tour in October. Of course, Three Rivers Wildcat Football is already in progress. If you can’t make it out to Armstrong Field for a home game, and if you aren’t able to travel to any of the away games, you can always listen to the game on local radio station WRCI-FM, 97.1 on your radio dial. If sports are not your thing, Three Rivers High School will present several music concerts before the end of the year. October has the Fall Vocal Music Concert and December has the Vocal Music Christmas Concert. Two other musical celebrations you won’t want to miss would be the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra performance in November and the annual Make We Merry performances in December. If you think there’s nothing to do here in the Three Rivers area, you’re not reading this column as often as you should. As event times draw closer, I’ll do my best to let you know the best way to get Out and About.

Last week I mentioned a few things that sometimes really boggle my mind. With your permission, I’d like to mention several more things that might make you sit back and go “Hmmmmm.”

  1. How many times is it appropriate to say “What?” before you just nod and smile, because you still didn’t hear what they said?
  2. I keep some people’s phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.
  3. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.

Have a safe week and I’ll see you Out and About.
