St. Joseph County is expected to begin the process of selling a building it owns in Centreville to an organization that has occupied its space the past four years.
County commissioners were told during their executive committee meeting Wednesday that Covered Bridge Healthcare would like to buy the building in which it has operated since July 2016.
The 1,980-square-foot building, formerly used by the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department’s SCAN unit, is located at 658 E. Main St.
Covered Bridge has been renting the building from the county for $3,000 a month.
County administrator Teresa Doehring said if the sale is authorized, Covered Bridge would pay the county $144,000 over a three-year period based on terms of a land-contract transaction. Commissioners are expected to vote on the proposed situation during their board meeting Tuesday.
Covered Bridge CEO Rick Shaffer said the agency recently spent more than $100,000 to purchase an adjacent car wash. The additional property would be ideal for the agency to expand its building, Shaffer added, further noting that Covered Bridge over the past four years has used $80,000 of its own money to remodel the interior of the building.
