County commission agrees to accept federal grant

St. Joseph County commissioners agreed to accept a federal grant that could net nearly $220,000.

During their board of commissioners meeting Tuesday, the five-member board staged a public hearing regarding CARES Act reimbursement funding for COVID-19-related expenses. A motion to accept the grant money followed and was passed.

County grant writer James Hissong said the Community Development Block Grant funding is from federal sources and administered through the state. He said the county could receive the full amount based on expenses it incurs over a period that started in March and concludes Dec. 31.

Hissong said he has already submitted a separate, $125,000 grant request on behalf of the county’s court system for costs it has had and expects to absorb because of the pandemic. He anticipates a response from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation by the end of next week.
